Moving to Berkeley, Hints?

Hi,
I'll be moving to Berkeley for spring term using a scholarship.

Do you have any hints for me to get started?

A quite important question is about housing. Since I got this
scholarship at short notice, we won't get a place in the housing
facilities.
Since we are three people with this scholarship, we plan to move
together and do appartment sharing.
For this we are interested in apartments with three bedrooms - can you
give me recommendations where to look for such appartments, and (quite
important) an estimated price range?
We probably have the option to take over the house of four friends who
are currently in Berkeley with this scholarship; but it's at 2000$ a month,
so we'd either need to find someone to move in with us or find a smaller
appartment. Or is this already a good price they pay?

Thanks for your replies,
Erich Schubert <erich@debian.org>

P.S. I'll arrive on January 13th - we could have a Key-signing meeting
a couple of days afterwards (mostly depending on when I have found a
place to stay)
