Setting up X

Does anybody have a procedures or a link to such on
how to set up X under Debian? I haven't done this in
over 3(?) years and it seems to have gotten much
harder. I been struggling w/ this for the past weekend.

The problem I'm having is I can't get it to use the
right H & V freqeuncies. I tried to enter them in by
using xf86config  and manually editing
/etc/X11/XF86Config & /etc/X11/XF86Config(I've also
tried reruning 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86') .
Does X still use this files under Debian? Because no
matter what freq I change to, the output to the
monitor is still the same (hf 74.8 vf 60) . I know
this because the monitor goes into safe mode telling
me what freq it could use and what's it getting.
Specifications:
Graphics card: ATI Rage Pro Turbo AGP (appears to
use the mach 64 chipset)
Monitor: 17 inch HF:30-70 Khz VF:50-150 Khz
Debian version:3.0 (ibstalled over the internet if
makes difference)
xpackages intsalled: xfree86-common xserver-common
xserver-xfree86
wm: kde

TIA
