I remember having one of those Conner CFP1060S "Barbados" drives. They
don't work on most OSes without a firmware upgrade. Checking on-line
suggests the firmware rev. in which they fixed the problem was 203C,
fairly late in its product life.

That may or may not be your immediate problem, but it's rather likely to
be an eventual problem. In light of how old the drive is, you might
want to retire it.
At this late date, you might want to start out with Debian 2.2 "potato".
