thanks for the suggestion Tom, but this is a chicken and egg situation.
wvdial comes up just fine and starts pppd but I've not yet gotten anything in or out
over the dialup internet connection - this is one that is being used
at home by my wife  as oppposed to the direct connection at work.
So I was hoping to use netscape to test the connection.  BTW, I did
get netscape 4.04 installed late last night but I've yet to get
it to work.  I think the problem is either:
 1.  recognizes that pppd is running
 2.  or I need to configure the proper server names - currently set to
     the same as my wife uses on windows 95.

I understand that there is a problem with some releases of 
netscape and the later versions of linux regarding java.  Any
suggestions as to which version of netscape works?
