<h1>Bay Area Debian</h1>
<p>Bay Area Debian is a loose collection of <a href="http://www.debian.org/">Debian</a> developers and enthusiasts in the San Francisco Bay Area in California. The Bay Area has a large linux-using population, large enough to make a group like Bay Area Debian possible. The group currently has over 100 members.</p>
<p>Bay Area Debian is not (yet) a formal linux user's group. It's more like an informal Debian SIG of other linux user's groups in the Bay Area, including <a href="http://www.balug.org/">BALUG</a> and <a href="http://www.svlug.org/">SVLUG</a>.</p>
<p>Bay Area Debian currently has get-togethers on the second Wednesday of many months.</p>

<h2>Past Events</h2>
<ul>
<li>BAD participated in <a href="http://www.linuxpicnic.org/">Picn*x XV, the 15th anniversary Linux Picnic</a>!</li>
<li>There was a BAD meeting at Jing Jing Szechwan and Hunan Gourmet Restaurant in Palo Alto (443 Emerson St.) on Wednesday, June 14 at 7pm.</li>
<li>A Debian booth was improvised at <b>LinuxWorld Expo</b>, August 4-7, 2003, and a BoF was organized for Tuesday, August 4, by HP CTO and former DPL Bdale Garbee.</li>
<li><b>Linux10.</b> There was a keysigning party at the <a href="http://www.linux10.org">Linux 10th Anniversary Picnic and Barbecue</a>, August 25 in Sunnyvale.</li>
<li><b>Monthly Get-Together</b></li>
<li><b>Real-life bug squashing party.</b> In conjunction with the online
efforts, 120 bugs were squashed in all.</li>
<li>Several keysigning events.</li>
<li><b>Linuxworld Expo</b><br/>
Linuxworld again. Debian 2.2 was released concurrent with LinuxWorld.</li>
<li><b>Meeting Ian Murdock</b>
Many people from BAD gathered in Bruce Perens's house to meet Ian Murdock, the founder of Debian. Other luminaries who showed up included Matt Walsh and Dan Quinlan. <a href="http://perens.com/Photos/IanMurdockParty/">pictures</a> are now up.</li>
<li><b>Debconf discussion</b><br/>
A few BAD people met at the Linux Cabal for a discussion about debconf.</li>
<li><b>LinuxWorld Expo</b><br/>
LinuxWorld again. Many of the same people showed up as well as some new faces. We also had a Debian dinner one night (at Denny's this time), and 26 people attended (including a member of the press).</li>
<li><b>BALUG Debian Benefit</b><br/>
Linus spoke at BALUG and the event was billed as a Debian benefit. VA and LiunuxCare donated about $7,000 to Debian, and <a href="http://marc.merlins.org/linux/balug9906/picts/500_aftertalk.jpg"> posters</a> were seen with the Debian logo on them. There was another Debian table at this meeting, with our own special guest: Amos Shapira, visiting from Israel.</li>
<li><b>Joint CABAL / BAD meeting</b><br/>
This was a joint meeting of BAD and the <a href="http://linuxmafia.com/cabal/">Linux CABAL</a>, and it took place at 2the Linux Cabal in back of the CoffeeNet. 10 to 15 people attended, this was an installfest/meeting. Rick Moen gave a talk on installing Debian aimed at newcomers to Debian. Two people installed Debian for the first time, and Debian was the topic of conversations throughout the evening and into the night.</li>
<li><b>The Second Debian Table at BALUG</b><br/>
Spontaneously, 10 Bay Area Debian people found themselves at a BALUG meeting and we enjoyed sitting together once again. Turns out the guest speaker for the meeting, Hans Reiser, was also a debian user, and Jim Pick who was also in the area also showed up.</li>
<li><b>Linuxworld expo</b><br/>
Bay Area Debian hosted a Debian booth at Linuxworld that was a great success. We even got some articles in the news about our booth. Many debian users and developers from ouside the Bay Area stopped by, including the Project Leader, and the booth was always a busy place. Photos from the event are <a href="http://www.debian.org/~joeyh/linuxworld/">available</a>. We also had a Debian dinner one night after the expo, and about 22 people attended.</li>
<li><b>Meeting at the CoffeeNet, with Ian Jackson and Dale Scheetz</b><br/>
The largest Bay Area Debian event so far, about 17 people showed up at the <a href="http://www.coffeenet.net">CoffeeNet</a> internet cafe to meet past project leader Ian Jackson and developer and author Dale Scheetz. Two summaries of how the meeting turned out have been written, one by <a href="http://bad.debian.net/list/1999-February/000071.html">Joey Hess</a>, and one by <a href="http://bad.debian.net/list/0016.html"> Dale Scheetz</a>.</li>
<li><b>Debian table at BALUG</b><br/>
This was the first meeting of any kind. We all asked BALUG to let us sit together at a table at one of their meetings. It wasn't coordinated too well and we actually split into 2 tables, but we did all get to meet each other at least breifly, and wowed BALUG a bit at the sudden influx of Debian people.</li>
