Well, LTSP _isn't_ remote X.
As for lag...
I was running a remote X setup for a while. _Most_ apps were
reasonable, but Galeon was painfully slow, in particular tab management
(navigation, creation, deletion).
I was using direct access (no SSH tunelling) over a local, hub (not
switched) 100 Mbps network.
There are some bandwidth-reduction proxies and such, but general word is
that they're best used on remote connections as they also introduce
latency.
Otherwise: if you can run window management locally, you're ahead of
much of the curve.
VNC might be a better option.
