You're right.  Given his preferences (which seem odd, but whatever), 
that's the most effective way to do it.

And, Alan, look up the "pinning" feature in recent apt versions, which
give you your most graceful way to pull packages from unstable while
remaining on a different branch.  Grep for "pinning" in
http://linuxmafia.com/debian/tips , and also note the bit about the
apt-show-versions script, just after that.
