Well, you give such little information, I'm not sure I can read too much of
your mind, but I'm going to assume that you're using XFree86 3.3.x as if
you're installing I think you might be using a CD of potato (no CDs for woody
I don't think;-).
You can try and do a dist upgrade to woody, and remove any of the XFree86
3.3.x packages, and install XFree86 4.x from it, and you might have better
luck with your video adapter. The configuration is much easier/better, IMO.
If you do this, get rid of all the packages you have and only select the
version 4.x stuff (xserver-common, xserver-xfree86, xfree86-common,
xbase-clients, xdm, xfs, xfonts-xxxx, etc...).
Then creating a config is typically easier (when it works;-), but just
executing:
/usr/X11R6/bin/xf86cfg -configure (as root)
should put a configuration file in your home directory.
AFAIK, your problem is not even related to XFree86 3.3.x, but I have no clue
with the info you gave other than it doesn't work.:-/
