Not at the time, but I tried it just now and it seems to have passed:
[michael@phoenix]:~/src/host-20000331 $ dpkg-checkbuilddeps
[michael@phoenix]:~/src/host-20000331 $ echo $?
0
The Build-Depends: line looks like:
Build-Depends: debhelper, bind-dev (>= 8.2.4-2)
(This is the bogus entry which should cause a failure.)
[michael@phoenix]:~/src/host-20000331 $ dpkg -l bind-dev
||/ Name Version Description
+++-==============-==============-============================================
ii bind-dev 8.2.4-1 Libraries used by BIND
