Most of the places near VA are pretty expensive. That said, there's a
Motel 6 (decent budget place) not too far from VA (for the locals, south
of the 101 but north of Central Expressway). That's less than two miles.
The only other option I know of is the Sheraton about a 3/4 mile closer.

The Sheraton is admittedly closer to a VTA line. For public transit, try
